APRIL 2017

Adam Conine
President, CPS IBEW Federal Credit Union

April is a fun time in San Antonio!  The bluebonnets are blooming, the city is buzzing with Fiesta excitement and at CPS IBEW FCU it is a great time to be a kid!  April is National Credit Union Youth Month and in this eNewsletter we share some fun filled, upcoming events, from Fiesta medals to Kids Fishing to exciting giveaways.

This month our "Give a Hoot About Savings" campaign encourages children to visit the credit union and make a savings deposit to receive a free gift.  Not sure how to talk to your kids about money?  Read “5 Ways to Teach Kids to Give a Hoot About Money" for easy ways to start the conversation.   As always, be safe while you are out and about.  Our article on gas pump skimming offers tips to protect you and your family as you hit the road.

Your feedback is important to us. Feel free to visit us at the Camden or Navarro branch, call us at (210) 353-2376, or send us an email at memberservices@cpsibewfcu.org. Let us know how we can help you.
Gas Pump Skimming: Safety Tips to Protect Yourself

Skimming is a popular theft that typically occurs at ATMs, but is now on the rise at gas pumps.  The crook opens the machine and installs a device inside the pump, usually invisible to staff and customers.

Most crooks obtain access to pumps by stealing meter keys or codes that are typically universal.  The installed device reads details and data off credit and debit cards.  In most cases it can even secretly film the keying of pin numbers.  The stolen information is then transmitted wirelessly to crooks who use it to make fraudulent purchases or manufacture so called "white cards", which is a blank card that can be used at ATMs to drain cash from the victims account. To avoid being a victim at the pump, click here for safety tips.

National Credit Union Youth Month

Teaching kids to save is a lesson that lasts a lifetime. Our Give a Hoot About Savings campaign rewards children for saving. During the month of April, children who make a savings deposit can choose from giveaways including coin purses, notepads, mood pencils and activity books. Click here for details on Youth Savings Accounts.

15th Annual Kids Fish Day

On April 8 we are excited once again to join more than 100 CPS Energy employees and family members to host a day of fishing for kids who may never get the opportunity otherwise.  Prior to the event, the Texas Parks & Wildlife Department stocks Calaveras Lake with hundreds of catfish. C.A.S.T. (Catch a Special Thrill) for Kids supplies rods, reels and buckets of bait and tackle. This year, CPS Energy will be hosting Roy Maas Youth Alternatives, a local agency that supports children of all ages in crisis. We look forward to a fun-filled day!

5 Ways to Teach Kids to “Give a Hoot” About Money

How old do children need to be to understand that money does not grow on trees?  If you are like most parents (72 percent of parents in the U.S., in fact), you may be reluctant to talk to your kids about financial matters. What if it makes them worry that we do not have enough? Will it cause them to become materialistic or money-obsessed? What if they simply do not understand or find the topic too boring? Put your fears to rest by incorporating small activities and discussion into daily life. Click here to get started with these 5 steps.
